Dubai 2008 Report – Gulf Gaelic Games

February 24th, 2008 by Munich GAA

The Colmcilless go east! Several members of the Colmcille teams travelled to Dubai to join the tournament that was held there on January 25th and 26th. It was an international tournament with over 40 teams and 400 players from Qatar, Dubai, Ireland, and England. A beautiful, 2-day tournament with sun and 22degrees, the 3 Munich players joined other teams to make full teams. Karl Sassenberg played hurling with the Civil Service team. He contributed to the greatly team and enjoyed himself immensely. Joanna Kowaczewska and Lauren McLaughlin also joined a participating team from London, Father Murphys. They helped Fr. Murphys make it to and win the Shield final on the second day. We thank both the Civil Service and Fr. Murphys for letting us play with them and would like to say that we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly and appreciate their kind consideration and friendliness.

In additions to a well-organized tournament, the atmosphere was exciting and fun for all players and spectators. The media coverage and sponsorship for the tounament was also fantastic. The climax of the
tournament was a match between the 2007 and 2008 ladies all-stars from Ireland. A facinating game to watch and real treat for all viewers. Overall a great and memorable tournament. It should be an aspiration next year for the Comcilles to travel as teams. The sport, social atmosphere and warm holiday would not disappoint anyone.
